Importing a Bank Statement
Upload an OFX/QFX bank or credit-card statement and start matching transactions against your captured receipts.
Last updated: 2026-06-02
Overview
The statement import feature lets you bring in transactions from your bank or credit card using OFX/QFX files. After import, the transactions become available in Stareceipt's banking and reconciliation flows.
For context on the full reconciliation workflow, see Bank Accounts & Reconciliation.
Supported file formats
Stareceipt currently supports OFX/QFX statement imports.
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
| OFX / QFX | Quicken-compatible format; imported directly |
Step 1 — Download your bank statement
Log in to your bank's online portal and export transactions for the period you want to reconcile. Look for OFX or QFX export options in your institution's download menu.
Keep the original file — Stareceipt stores a copy, but having the original makes troubleshooting easier if columns are misaligned.
Step 2 — Upload the file
- Open the ledger you want to reconcile.
- Go to Bank Accounts in the left sidebar.
- Select the bank account (or click Add account if this is your first import).
- Click Import statement → Upload OFX/QFX.
- Choose your downloaded file.
Receipt parses the file and shows an import summary.
Step 3 — Review and import
Stareceipt displays an import result summary, including:
- how many transactions were inserted,
- how many rows were skipped,
- how many banking rules were applied during import.
Complete the import to add the transactions to the selected bank account.
Step 4 — Match transactions
After import, the transactions appear in the banking and reconciliation views. Current shared clients surface reconciliation states such as unreconciled, reconciled, partial, and dismissed. See Bank Accounts & Reconciliation for the full workflow.
Re-importing the same period
If you re-upload a statement that overlaps with previously imported transactions, the import result can skip rows that already exist instead of blindly duplicating them.
Troubleshooting
"Could not parse statement" warning
Your file may be malformed or exported in an unsupported statement format. Re-export from your bank as OFX/QFX and retry.
Import fails with unsupported extension
Receipt only accepts .ofx and .qfx for statement import in this workflow.
Statement descriptions are cryptic bank codes
This is common with institution-generated data. After import, you can still reconcile by amount/date and apply transaction rules for consistent categorisation.
File is larger than allowed
Split the statement into smaller date-range chunks (for example monthly) and import each file separately.
